Mormolyce phyllodes is one of those specimens that stops people mid-sentence. Found across the rainforests of Southeast Asia, it earned its name from a body that genuinely looks like someone carved a tiny violin out of chitin, flat and wide with a silhouette that feels more like surrealist sculpture than insect anatomy. It belongs to the family Carabidae, ground beetles, which makes this flat, leaf-litter-skimming predator the dark horse of the beetle world.
