FUDGE TUNNEL: In A Word Cassette

Fudge Tunnel were too ugly for the mainstream and too weird for the underground to fully claim them, which made them exactly right. In A Word, their 1995 swansong, is the sound of a band going out by turning the volume up on everything that made them difficult in the first place. Sludge, noise rock, and a general contempt for anything clean or comfortable.

Alex Newport and company were doing something in the early nineties that sat at the intersection of Melvins heaviness, Unsane abrasiveness, and a particularly British sourness that never quite translated to mass appeal. Which is its own kind of credibility. In A Word is the closing argument from a band that never made a single concession to likability, and it sounds incredible on tape. This is grunge and alternative metal filtered through a broken radiator and a bad week, and it rules.
