FEAR FACTORY: Obsolete Vinyl LP (Numbered 180g Colour)

1998. Fear Factory had already rewritten what a metal band could sound like with Demanufacture, and then they released Obsolete and made it worse for everyone else trying to keep up.

Obsolete landed as a concept record about a future where humanity had been replaced by machines, which sounds like a lot of bands' aesthetic posturing except Fear Factory actually built the architecture to match. Dino Cazares' down-tuned industrial riffing locked into Raymond Herrera's mechanical double-kick like they were both running the same program, and Burton C. Bell alternated between melodic vocal hooks and sheer aggression in a way that still sounds like it shouldn't work as well as it does. Shock, Edgecrusher, Descent, the sequencing holds. The album gave the metal and industrial crossover scene a genuine landmark, and it has not aged out. This numbered 180g colour pressing, Crystal Clear and Black Marbled, is the version this record deserved from the start.
