EXODUS Shovel Headed Kill Machine CD (2005)

Bay Area thrash metal has a short list of founding architects, and Exodus are on it. They were there before Metallica got famous, they lost their singer to Metallica, and they kept going anyway with a chip on their shoulder roughly the size of a shovel head. Which brings us here.

Shovel Headed Kill Machine is the 2005 return of Paul Baloff-era vocalist Rob Dukes and it is not subtle. This is thrash played with the specific fury of a band that has spent twenty years watching their genre get diluted and has opinions about it. Riffs like industrial machinery, tempos that don't relent, lyrics with a body count. If your punk and metal collection has a gap somewhere between Reign in Blood and Terrible Certainty, this fills it with extreme prejudice. Serious alternative fashion credentials in any record collection worth the shelf space.
