By 1997, Entombed had already burned down the church of pure death metal and were deep in their own thing, a swaggering, HM-2-soaked hybrid that borrowed as much from the Stooges as from Autopsy. This self-titled compilation catches them mid-mutation.

Released on Earache at a moment when the Swedish death metal scene was fracturing into a hundred arguments about authenticity, this comp is a useful document of a band who genuinely did not care what purists thought. The Death 'N' Roll tag stuck because nobody had a better one. Still doesn't.
