Xylotrupes gideon is a scarab, which means it comes loaded with thousands of years of cultural weight, ancient Egyptian iconography, death symbolism, rebirth mythology, the whole deal. The species itself ranges across Australasia, so there is something locally resonant about this one finding its way into a gothic or alternative collection. The horns on the male are not decorative, they fight with them, jousting style, which is frankly more metal than most things.
