The Calopteryx virgo, the Beautiful Demoiselle, is a European dragonfly with iridescent wings that shift colour depending on the light and the angle and what the light is doing that afternoon. As a framed specimen it reads as genuinely ancient, which it is, in the most literal sense. The odonates predate almost everything alive today, and there is something appropriately unsettling about that when you sit with it.
