DODHEIMSGARD 666 International (1999) CD
By 1999, black metal had eaten itself and Dodheimsgard were already somewhere else entirely, laughing at the wreckage.
666 International is one of the most genuinely strange records to come out of Norway's extreme metal underground, and that is saying something. Where their peers were still painting their faces and burning churches, DHG were splicing industrial noise, avant-garde jazz logic, and utterly unhinged electronics into their black metal framework. The result sounds like a transmission from a collapsing parallel universe. Aldrahn's vocals lurch between rasped fury and something approaching crooning. Vicotnik's production is deliberately wrong in all the right ways. It is alienating, brilliant, and unlike almost anything else in the canon. This is not a gateway record. It is a reward for people who have already gone too far down the rabbit hole and want to keep going.
