I Don't Want To Grow Up is the album that codified melodic hardcore as a legitimate emotional language, not a lesser version of punk but its own anxious, coffee-addicted, romantically frustrated thing. Milo Aukerman went back to college to study biochemistry and the band wrote an album about it. The results are tight, tuneful, occasionally hilarious, and genuinely moving in a way that a lot of bands have spent decades trying to replicate. This is the record that connects the Black Flag scene to every pop-punk band that followed, the bridge between aggression and melody that SST Records didn't entirely know what to do with at the time. Forty years on, it still sounds urgent.
