Released in 2020, Ohms is the Sacramento five-piece doing what they do better than almost anyone in the alternative and metal space, which is making heavy music that feels like texture and grief rather than aggression for its own sake. Chino Moreno's vocals drift between a whisper and a wall of sound, Stephen Carpenter's guitar work is the kind of riff architecture that takes three listens to fully map, and the whole record has that signature Deftones quality where it sounds enormous but never cluttered. It belongs in the same breath as White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist, which is not a sentence you write lightly. Dark aesthetic, precise emotional damage, essential vinyl.
