DEFTONES: Around The Fur Vinyl LP
In 1997, the Deftones stopped being a band people argued about and became a band everyone had to reckon with.
Around the Fur was the record that made it undeniable. Chino Moreno's vocals swung between feral and genuinely beautiful, the guitars were dense and dissonant in ways that post-grunge radio had no frame of reference for, and tracks like My Own Summer (Shove It) and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) lodged in your skull and stayed there. This wasn't nu metal doing art school, this was alternative metal doing something with actual emotional weight. Nearly thirty years on, the album sounds less like a product of its era and more like a benchmark the era failed to meet. On black 180 gram vinyl, the low-end warmth it deserves.
