DEATH YELL Morbid Rites (2007) CD
Chile in the late 80s was producing some of the most feral, genuinely unhinged black and death metal on the planet, and Death Yell were in the thick of it. This is the kind of band that tape traders hunted down before the internet made everything easy.
Morbid Rites collects Death Yell's early recordings into a compilation that makes a strong case for why the South American underground deserves the same reverence as the Scandinavian scene. Raw, primitive, absolutely committed to the darkness, this sits comfortably alongside the chaos of Sarcofago and early Sepultura, with that same sense of something being performed at the edge of collapse. The black metal and death metal genres hadn't fully separated yet, and Death Yell sound like they preferred it that way. Essential document of an era and a scene that built the metal underground with no resources and no apologies.
