The last album Death ever made, and they went out at a level most bands never reach in the first place. The Sound of Perseverance is 1998 progressive death metal that still makes people argue about whether it's the genre's ceiling or a genre unto itself entirely.

Chuck Schuldiner didn't just write riffs, he rewrote the rules every record he dropped. By this point Death was so technically unhinged and melodically ambitious that half the metal press didn't know what to call it anymore. That's a compliment.
