Before death metal had a name, it had an address: Tampa, Florida, 1987. Chuck Schuldiner recorded Scream Bloody Gore largely alone, playing almost every instrument himself, and in doing so accidentally invented a genre that would spawn a thousand bands and zero equals.

This is the one. Not a precursor, not a footnote, the actual ground zero. The riffs here are angular and relentless in a way that still sounds genuinely unhinged decades on, and the production has that raw, almost demo-quality edge that no remaster has ever successfully smoothed out (and shouldn't). If you've spent time digging through the Florida death metal canon, you know this record doesn't just open the chapter, it writes the whole book. Essential listening alongside Possessed's Seven Churches and Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness, but honestly Scream Bloody Gore arrived before either of those had worked out what they were doing.
