But the death's-head hawkmoth, Acherontia atropos, has been unnerving people since long before Thomas Harris got involved, showing up in paintings as an omen of death, a symbol of the soul, a thing that squeaks at you if you annoy it.

A real Acherontia atropos, the skull pattern on its thorax as unsettling in person as you'd hope, professionally set and framed for display. It belongs in a dark study, above a record collection, next to a shelf of horror paperbacks. The gothic aesthetic doesn't get more direct than actual entomology.
