There's a version of Australian music history where Dave Graney is a household name. He isn't, and that's entirely the point. A Melbourne cult figure who spent the nineties making literate, louche, country-tinged rock and roll that critics loved and radio mostly ignored, Graney operated in his own timezone, and Night Of The Wolverine is proof that timezone was worth visiting.

Recorded with the Coral Snakes, his long-running band and creative partnership with Clare Moore, this is alt-country that doesn't play cowboy, it plays detective. Graney's deadpan baritone, the loosely swinging arrangements, the B-movie cool of it all, it sits somewhere between Nick Cave's Bad Seeds, Lee Hazlewood, and a late-night Melbourne bar that closed fifteen years ago. This is Australian alternative music with genuine personality, the kind that doesn't arrive pre-packaged with a genre sticker that quite fits.
