DARKTHRONE Transilvanian Hunger (1994) CD

There are albums that defined black metal, and then there is Transilvanian Hunger, which basically closed the argument.

Recorded in 1993 and released in early 1994, this is Darkthrone at their most stripped, most deliberate, and most uncompromising. Fenriz and Nocturno Culto shed almost everything that wasn't essential and what remained was hypnotic, lo-fi, freezing black metal that sounded like it was recorded in a Norwegian winter because it essentially was. The riffs don't so much develop as accumulate. The production is famous for being terrible on purpose, and it works. Blaze in the Northern Sky had announced the template but Transilvanian Hunger is where Darkthrone disappeared into the aesthetic entirely. This is the album that gets cited every time a band wants to prove they understand the genre's roots. Original 1994 pressing.
