Before the corpse paint, before A Blaze in the Northern Sky rewrote the rules, Darkthrone were doing something else entirely. Soulside Journey is the album that proves they could have gone a completely different direction, and it would have been great either way.

Released in 1991 when the Norwegian underground was still figuring out what it wanted to be, this is Darkthrone in full death metal mode, technically sharp and genuinely menacing in a way that has nothing to do with what came after. The fact that they pivoted so hard directly following this record makes it feel like a document of a band at a crossroads, which is exactly why collectors keep chasing it. This picture disc pressing is limited to 2000 copies worldwide, so it sits on the wall as much as it sits on the turntable.
