DARKTHRONE Panzerfaust CD 1995

By 1995, Darkthrone had already made Transilvanian Hunger and were actively trying to sabotage their own accessibility. Panzerfaust arrived with a dedication to Varg Vikernes, a deliberately primitive production aesthetic, and zero interest in whether you were keeping up. It is exactly as confrontational as it sounds.

This is the record where Nocturno Culto and Fenriz doubled down on lo-fi black metal orthodoxy at a time when the Norwegian scene was burning, literally and otherwise. The riffs are slow, cold, and hypnotic in a way that later Darkthrone records refined but never quite recaptured. It's not an easy listen. That is entirely the point. The CD format is the correct format for an album this uncompromising, played loud, alone, at 2am.
