There are records that changed a genre and then there are records that burned the genre's previous house down and built a new one out of the ash and Norwegian winter. A Blaze In The Northern Sky is the second kind. Released in 1992, this is the album where Darkthrone abandoned death metal entirely, picked up the primitive cold-fi aesthetic of early Bathory, and more or less blueprinted the second wave of black metal alongside their Helvete circle contemporaries.

Nocturno Culto and Fenriz stripped everything back to something rawer and more hostile than almost anything being recorded at the time. Under a Funeral Moon followed. Transilvanian Hunger followed that. None of it happens without this record existing first. This 2001 reissue comes with the kind of liner notes that reward actually reading them, not just using the disc as a prop.
