DANZIG Skeletons (2015) Digipak CD
Glenn Danzig covering classic rock and proto-metal songs is either the most self-indulgent thing he's ever done or the most honest, and honestly, with Glenn, that line has always been blurry.
Skeletons is a covers record, but calling it that slightly misses the point. Danzig has always been explicit about his influences, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, the raw American rock and roll that predates punk by a decade, and this album is him working through that genealogy in his own cathedral-heavy style. Tracks like his take on Elvis and McCoys classics filtered through that unmistakable baritone make clear that the Misfits and Samhain were always just one stop on a longer, weirder trip. For the dark aesthetic collector who already has the obvious records, Skeletons is the interesting footnote that actually tells you something. Digipak edition.
