CURE, (The) Pornography RSD Vinyl Picture Disc 1992LP

If Disintegration is the Cure album everyone puts on when they want to feel something, Pornography is the one they put on when they've already felt too much. Released in 1982 and recorded at what Robert Smith has described as a point of genuine psychological collapse, it remains one of the bleakest and most uncompromising records in post-punk history.

This RSD picture disc marks the 40th anniversary of an album that basically codified the dark aesthetic of gothic rock before anyone had agreed on what to call it. "100 Years" opens like a verdict. "A Short Term Effect" sounds like the walls closing in. Simon Gallup's bass is doing things that still don't make complete sense. It's a record that requires commitment, and rewards it absolutely. The picture disc format suits it, because Pornography was always as much an object as it was a listening experience.
