Released in 1980, the record pulled from the early singles that Robert Smith and co had been sharpening since 1978, nervous energy, deadpan heartbreak, guitars that jangle like anxiety. It's the gateway record, the one that leads to Pornography, to Disintegration, to realising you have been goth this whole time and just didn't have the vocabulary for it.
