By 1989 The Cult had already burned through their post-punk past, their leather-and-feedback middle period, and landed somewhere enormous. Sonic Temple is the record where Billy Duffy's guitar became a cathedral and Ian Astbury decided he was a shaman fronting a stadium rock band. He was not wrong.

Produced by Bob Rock before Bob Rock was Bob Rock (he'd go on to do Metallica's Black Album, make of that what you will), Sonic Temple is the sound of a gothic rock band refusing to stay gothic and making something that hit harder for it. Fire Woman, Edie (Ciao Baby), Sun King, and Sweet Soul Sister don't need defending. The Mission fans who held it against them were always a bit precious about it. This 2LP pressing gives the record the room it was always asking for.
