CRADLE OF FILTH Dusk And Her Embrace CD (1996)

Before the major label budgets and the think pieces about whether Cradle of Filth counted as proper black metal, there was Dusk and Her Embrace, the album that turned a Suffolk extreme metal band into a genuine gothic phenomenon. 1996 and they were already writing like they'd read every Victorian horror novel twice.

This is the record that established everything the COF aesthetic would become: the romantic darkness, the literary horror references, the wall of symphonic keys underneath Dani's unhinged vocal range, and an overall vibe like a black metal film score for a film nobody had made yet. Funeral in Carpathia and A Gothic Romance remain untouchable. The production has that raw, cavernous quality that a thousand polished imitators have spent three decades trying to recapture. This is the one that got people into the genre and the one that kept them there.
