Named for the city of monsters in Barker's Cabal, Midian arrived at peak Cradle, the moment when Dani Filth's baroque horror vision had the budget and the band to match the ambition. Her Ghost in the Fog is one of the genuinely great gothic metal songs of its era, and the album surrounding it holds up better than the discourse around the band ever gives it credit for. This is extreme metal that leans hard into horror literature and dark aesthetic theatrics without apology, which is exactly the kind of thing we're here for. The 2007 digipak pressing is the one to own, packaged to match the drama of the music inside.
