1998's Cruelty and the Beast is the album that convinced a generation of Australian teenagers that black metal could be operatic, grotesque, and completely obsessed with Elizabeth Báthory, which, honestly, fair enough.

Cradle of Filth occupy a strange and specific corner of the extreme metal world, too symphonic for the purists, too filthy for the goths, beloved by anyone who has ever owned a corset and a copy of NME simultaneously. Dani Filth's shriek is either the greatest or most absurd thing in heavy music depending on your mood, and Cruelty and the Beast is where that argument is most productively had. This patch represents the album's peak, and it belongs on the jacket of someone who knows the difference between Dusk and Her Embrace and Midian and has opinions about it. The gothic and symphonic black metal crossover has never looked better at 100mm.
