Chrysiridia Riphaeria Visa + Verso Black Moth Framed Specimen

Everyone calls it a butterfly. Everyone is wrong. Chrysiridia riphaeria is a moth, a day-flying moth from Madagascar that decided if it was going to be misidentified, it might as well look extraordinary doing it.

Known as the Sunset Moth, this specimen is displayed visa and verso, meaning both sides of the wings are shown. That matters here, because the rainbow metallic iridescence shifts differently on each surface, blues, greens, reds and oranges catching light depending on the angle. The colours aren't pigment, they're structural, produced by microscopic layers in the wing scales. It is, without question, one of the most visually dramatic insects in the world, which is exactly why it belongs on the wall of someone with taste dark enough to appreciate the fact that the most beautiful thing in the room is technically a moth.
