Before Napalm Records came calling, before the world caught on, there was this, a first-press CD-demo that circulated through the Melbourne underground like a secret only the right people knew. Chronicles of Dysphoria is where Australian gothic doom metal found its voice, and it still sounds like grief given architecture.

Chalice were doing something genuinely rare here, weaving operatic female vocals through slow, suffocating doom in a way that sat comfortably alongside the Norwegian and Italian scenes without sounding like a copy of either. This is the record that led to An Illusion to the Temporary Real, and hearing it is like finding the draft of something that was already almost perfect. First press copies of Australian demo material from this era almost never surface in this condition.
