Chaingun are an Australian act working the intersection of doom and traditional heavy metal, which in 2019 meant swimming against a fairly strong tide of everything else, and good on them for it. Souls of Hunger sits in the lineage of the genre's foundational texts, from the Birmingham end of the spectrum through to the American doom revival that gave us Trouble and Candlemass at their most crushing. For a local band to pull that off with conviction is worth your attention and your $20. Dark aesthetic, serious riff weight, no theatrics that aren't earned. This is the kind of record you find in a good collection next to your Black Sabbath catalogue and never question why it's there.
