Nagash, the guy who basically moonlighted across half of Norwegian black metal's golden era, put out this solo project in 1999 between his stints in Dimmu Borgir and Covenant. Carpe Tenebrum was his way of going darker, denser, more atmospherically violent than the day job allowed.

Mirrored Hate Painting lands somewhere between symphonic black metal grandeur and the rawer, more uncompromising end of the Norwegian scene. It's got that late-nineties production sheen that somehow made everything sound both massive and genuinely sinister, a combination the genre largely stopped achieving once keyboards became a checkbox rather than a weapon.
