Every extreme metal band eventually makes the album their original fanbase never forgives them for. Carcass made theirs in 1996, and it rules.

Swansong ditched the surgical death metal of Heartwork and went full death 'n' roll, bluesy riffs, swagger, hooks you could actually hum. Jeff Walker leaned into the rock and roll sleaze and the result is one of the most misunderstood records in British heavy metal history. It got dismissed on release, then quietly became a cult touchstone for everyone who likes their alternative music dark, groovy, and a little bit filthy. This is the final transmission from one of the UK underground's greatest bands before their long hiatus, on cassette, because some records deserve to be experienced with that much tape hiss.
