Varg Vikernes recorded the original versions of these tracks in the early nineties on a four-track in Bergen, and they became foundational texts for black metal, lo-fi aesthetics, and a certain kind of solitary, atmospheric darkness that still casts a long shadow. From The Depths Of Darkness is his 2011 re-recording of material from the first two Burzum albums, stripped back and redelivered with cleaner production and the same suffocating intent.

Whether you approach this as a document of black metal history or a standalone piece of dark, hypnotic minimalism, it lands differently depending on where you stand. The raw, droning quality that defined early Norwegian black metal is still present, still cold, still distinctly Burzum.
