Blue Dragonfly Framed Specimen

Morpho dragonfly, has metallic blue wings, due to the colours being iridescent they look different when viewed at various angels.

Blue pigment is rare in nature and strangely the Morpho has no blue on its wings the colour is powered by abundant oxygen from tiny respiratory channels on the leaf shaped wings, these channels create a living layer of light-manipulating black pigment–filled nanolayers. This enhances reflections of blue light and muddle other wavelengths.

The blue wings may help a male intimidate rivals for breeding territory around the edges of their palm tree swamp homeland. Male dragonflies don’t just dart and bluff. Often the male dragonfly rushes towards the rival, grabbing the wings, then violently biting the wings and sometimes the head.
