Released in 1973, this is the album where Ozzy, Iommi, Butler and Ward pushed past the blueprint they'd already written and got genuinely weird with it. Synthesizers crept in alongside the riffs. The doom got more complex, more textured, and somehow heavier for it. The title track remains one of the most ferocious openings in heavy music, and "A National Acrobat" is proof that Geezer Butler was writing philosophy while everyone else was writing chord charts. If you've been sleeping on this one in favour of Paranoid, consider this your intervention.
