Riot grrrl didn't ask for permission and it didn't explain itself. Bikini Kill spent the early nineties building a movement out of Olympia and DC that made a lot of people very uncomfortable, which was exactly the point.

Reject All American, released in 1996, was their final studio album and it hit harder than most bands manage on their first. Kathleen Hanna's lyrics cut through the noise the way they always did, sharp and direct, while the band locked into a tighter, more ferocious version of the punk they'd been refining since the zine days. This isn't nostalgia, it's a document of a scene that changed what alternative music thought it was allowed to say.
