BARONESS Gold & Grey CD (2019)

Savannah, Georgia's finest art-metal export spent three years making Gold & Grey, and a large part of that time was John Baizley reportedly recording while nursing injuries from the band's near-fatal 2012 tour bus crash. That context matters. This is an album about survival, chaos, and the strange beauty that comes after, and it sounds exactly like that.

Released in 2019, Gold & Grey is Baroness at their most sprawling and least predictable, weaving progressive rock textures, sludge-weight riffs, and genuine psychedelia into something that resists easy categorisation. It divided some of the metal crowd and that's basically the highest praise you can give it. If you came in through Yellow & Green and stayed, this is the album that rewards you for sticking around.
