AUTOPSY: Severed Survival Vinyl LP
There are death metal records, and then there is Severed Survival, the 1989 debut that helped define what death metal was allowed to sound like before anyone had written the rules down.
Autopsy were operating out of the Bay Area at a time when their peers were chasing speed and technicality, and Chris Reifert and company went the other direction entirely, into something slower, uglier, and far more disturbing. The production is filthy in all the right ways, the riffs lurch and drag like something you'd rather not look at directly, and it still sounds genuinely threatening decades later. If you have a gap in your vinyl collection where this record should be, that is a problem worth fixing immediately. A foundational document of extreme metal's dark aesthetic and a stone cold classic of horror-drenched underground music.
