ATOMIC BITCHWAX, (The) Gravitron (2015) CD

Stoner rock doesn't need to reinvent itself when it's already running on pure riff momentum. The Atomic Bitchwax have been New Jersey's best-kept heavy secret since the late nineties, and Gravitron is them firing on all cylinders, a locked-in, fuzzed-out freight train of psychedelic heavy rock that doesn't stop to ask if you're keeping up.

This is the sound of a band who clearly grew up on Blue Cheer and Blue Öyster Cult but spent the nineties in the same orbit as Monster Magnet (not a coincidence, given the personnel crossover). Gravitron sits in that sweet spot where stoner rock meets hard-charging punk energy, not slow and sludgy, but tight and relentless. It belongs in the same collection as your Nebula and Orange Goblin records, and it absolutely belongs at ALT CVLT.
