At The Gates wrote Slaughter of the Soul in 1995, promptly broke up, and inadvertently handed an entire generation of metalcore and melodic death metal bands their entire vocabulary. When they came back, the question wasn't whether they still had it, it was whether anyone could handle it.

To Drink From the Night Itself, their 2018 return after The Nightmare of Being and the post-reunion dust settling, is Tomas Lindberg and crew sounding genuinely hungry again. Sharper, darker, and less nostalgic than At War with Reality, it leans into Gothenburg's classic melodic death metal DNA without coasting on legacy. If you got into the dark aesthetic of Swedish death metal through the Earache back catalogue or the Heartwork era Carcass, this sits comfortably in that lineage.
