Gardens of Grief came out in 1991 and At the Gates were already doing something that most Swedish death metal bands would spend the rest of the decade trying to figure out.

This is before Slaughter of the Soul, before melodic death metal became a genre name people threw around casually, before The Haunted spun off and carried the torch in a different direction. Gardens of Grief is the raw document, four tracks recorded in Gothenburg when the band were teenagers with a rehearsal room and a very specific idea about where heaviness could go when you let melody into the room. The tee is for the person who knows the EP, not just the album, and who probably has opinions about the Gothenburg scene that could fill a long train ride. Fits the alternative fashion end of the metal wardrobe where industrial and grunge blur into something darker.
