Norway has never been interested in subtlety, and 1349 are proof that the second wave never really ended, it just got faster and meaner. Demonoir, released in 2010, is the sound of a band deciding that atmosphere and velocity are not mutually exclusive.

This is black metal that earns its reputation the hard way. Where some of their contemporaries leaned into ambient sprawl, 1349 kept the boot on the throat. Ravn's vocals sit somewhere between a curse and a threat, Frost's drumming sounds like a machine that has genuinely lost control, and the whole record has a claustrophobic density that makes it feel like it was recorded inside a storm drain. Not background music. Not casual listening. Exactly where it should be.
