Mortification are one of the more genuinely interesting anomalies Australian heavy music has ever produced, a Melbourne band playing extreme metal with a ferocity that had nothing to prove to anyone, Christian lyrics and all. If you slept on them because of the genre tag, that's your loss.

By 2001 they'd been through lineup chaos, Steve Rowe's near-fatal blood disease, and over a decade of relentless recording and touring. The Silver Cord Is Severed came out of that crucible as a grinding, punishing record that sits comfortably in Australian death and thrash metal history regardless of what it says on the lyric sheet. This is extreme metal made locally, by people who had been through actual adversity, and it sounds like it. Australian made, and worth knowing about.
