Panos Cosmatos's Mandy is a grief film wearing the skin of a revenge horror, Nicolas Cage in the woods, a demonic biker cult, a chainsaw duel, and underneath all of it this score, which pulls black metal, doom drone, menacing ambient and orchestral dread into something genuinely singular. Jóhannsson had been edging toward this territory across his career but here he commits completely. The translucent red vinyl is not a gimmick, it's the only colour this record should exist in. If you are the kind of person whose dark aesthetic extends to the record shelf, this is essential.
